At DEB's Learning Academy we provide an after school program that focuses on the total development of the student outside of the classroom. Homework help and tutoring are a major part of the evening done in a fun and game orientated way that supports interest and learning at the same time.

Meet the Team

 

  • Ms. Dahalia Beccan grew up in Jamaica W.I. where education was a big deal, the JAMAL (Jamaican Movement for the advancement of literacy) program was instituted to provide adults with literacy, numeracy and life skills to eradicate illiteracy amongst our adult population. Years later as a teacher, she knew they all had a part to play in ensuring that they carried that legacy into the next generation. Every teacher was a teacher of English and while at teacher’s college she was taught to see the value and worth in every child.

    After ten years of teaching in Jamaica, Ms. Beccan migrated to the United States of America where she continued her mission to provide numeracy and literacy to every child she met while working in the Catholic School system. She started D.E.B’s Tutoring in 2010 when she identified that her students struggle in math was as a result of their poor reading and lack of comprehension skills. The reading results in the Bronx has remain consistently below that of the other boroughs, if we can change these results “one score at a time” then we would be on our way to improving the literacy and numeracy skills in the Bronx. D.E.B’s Tutoring is committed to providing a safe space outside of school where students can come to improve their reading and math skills, learn life skills and engage in activities that they would not be able to access otherwise.

    In 2015, D.E.B’s Tutoring became D.E.B’s LEARNING ACADEMY, while we changed the name our mission to provide educational empowerment, character development to marginalized, yet academically motivated youths in a value centered environment that prepares them for a rewarding career and successful life has remained resolute. Our Afterschool Program, Summer camp and Saturday Academy is determined to build the bridges necessary for tomorrows’ success.

    Ms. Beccan has over 25 years of teaching experience and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics, she has developed her own unique style of diagnosing her students to identify their strengths and weaknesses and create an individual curriculum that uses their strengths to quickly fix their weak areas. The future of D.E.B’s LEARNING ACADEMY is to be the number one Afterschool program on this side of the hemisphere by providing quality programs that changes lives one score at a time.
